Charlotte, N.C – Behind nine singles wins and four doubles victories, the Charlotte 49ers (7-6) defeated UNCG (4-3), 6-1, and UNC Asheville (5-5), 5-2, in their home opening doubleheader at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.

“I am really proud of our guys today,” Charlotte coach Jeremy Feldman said. “They’ve been putting in a lot of hard work and it paid off today. It was great to break the losing streak at home in front of our home crowd.  We are looking forward to another great test tomorrow on the road against Gardner-Webb.”

In the morning, Charlotte behind five singles and two doubles victories defeated UNCG. Charlotte won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At number one doubles, Charlotte’s Sam Rice and Leonardo Menezes lost to UNCG’s Connor Thompson and Marcus Vidgren, 6-3. At number three doubles, Charlotte’s Max Benaim and Josh Aubrey defeated UNCG’s Warren Bryan and Logan Walker, 6-4. At number two doubles, Charlotte’s Alejandro Garcia Moreno and Oriol Puig Forne clinched the doubles point for the 49ers with a 6-4 win over UNCG’s William Albright and Jack Burkill.

Charlotte won five of the six singles matches to claim the overall victory. At number four singles, Charlotte’s Puig Forne defeated UNCG’s Bryan, 6-4, 7-5. At number three singles, Charlotte’s Garcia Moreno defeated UNCG’s Albright, 7-5, 6-4. At number five singles, Charlotte’s Benaim won his fourth straight match with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over UNCG’s Burkill. At number one singles, Charlotte’s Rice defeated UNCG’s Thompson, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. At number two singles, Charlotte’s Menezes defeated UNCG’s Vidgren, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. At number six singles, Charlotte’s Jensen Martin lost to UNCG’s Daniel Hammarstedt in three hard fought sets, 6-7, 6-4, 6-0.

In the afternoon, Charlotte behind four singles wins and two doubles victories defeated UNC Asheville, 5-2. Charlotte won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At number two doubles, Charlotte’s Garcia Moreno and Puig Forne defeated UNC Asheville’s James Massie and Andrew Sinai, 6-1. At number one doubles, Charlotte’s Rice and Menezes lost to UNC Asheville’s Henry Patten and Josh Swindler, 6-2. At number three doubles, Charlotte’s Aubrey and Benaim clinched the doubles point for the 49ers with a 6-3 win over UNC Asheville’s Reid Dillon and Olly Cull.

Charlotte won four of the six singles matches to claim the overall victory. At number three singles, Charlotte’s Garcia Moreno cruised past UNC Asheville’s Cull, 6-1, 6-0. At number four singles, Charlotte’s Puig Forne posted a straight sets win, 6-2, 6-2, over UNC Asheville’s Dillon. At number one singles, Charlotte’s Rice lost to UNC Asheville’s Patten, 6-1, 6-3. At number five singles, Charlotte’s Benaim won his fifth straight match with a 7-6, 6-2 win over UNC Asheville’s Sinai. At number two singles, Charlotte’s Menezes lost to UNC Asheville’s Swindler in three hard fought sets, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9. At number six singles, Charlotte’s Martin defeated UNC Asheville’s Massie, 7-6, 6-3.
